XX Research Seminar of the DEMOSPAZ-UAM Institute

Mediation of Conflicts in Community Contexts”, 21 November 2019, Madrid

The seminar “Conflict Mediation in Community Contexts” was our 20th Research Seminar and we had the participation of two experts in the field.

Carlos Giménez Romero, Professor of Social Anthropology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Director of the DEMOSPAZ Institute

Juan Pablo Matta, Director of the Group of Sociocultural Studies of Conflict (GESC) at the Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires and Postdoctoral Fellow of Fundación Carolina.

Juan Pablo Matta told us about the self-determination of the parties involved, the voluntary participation and the confidentiality of the mediator, remembering that a conflict is a disagreement that derives from “a perception” of incompatibility by the parties and that not all conflicts are violent. On the other hand, Carlos Giménez, highlighted the importance of mediation, “today more important than ever”, as the main route for a Peace Culture. Mediation provides prevention, regulation, resolution and transformation of conflicts. The director of DEMOSPAZ also reflected on the concept of “community”, which should include institutions, expertise of technicians and professionals and citizenship.

The seminar was concluded with an intervention by Mr. Federico Mayor Zaragoza, President of the Foundation Culture of Peace and Co-President of DEMOSPAZ and with several interventions from the public.
