Project EXCELLENCE: “Democracy at schools as a basis for an education for Social Justice”

Research team: Research Group Educational Change for Social Justice (GICE), the University Institute of Human Rights, Democracy, Culture of Peace and Nonviolence (DEMOSPAZ) and five universities (England, Portugal, Argentina, Chile and Mexico).

Description: The project focuses on the knowledge and understanding of democracy in schools as the foundation of an education for Social Justice. The generating idea arises from the proposals of Nancy Fraser (2006, 2007, 2008) who argues that any search for social justice should be a search for democratization – and vice versa. So, no criterion of social justice can be defined authoritatively, since in this action he would deny himself the character of just. This research focuses on school culture and on the conceptions of members of the school community about democracy. The project is composed of three sub studies:

  1. Phenomenographic study: conceptions of democracy in schools
  2. Etnographic study: democracy in educational centres
  3. Research action: influence democracy in schools committed to social justice
